The Yamaha AvantGrand series are hybrid pianos that combine the feel and mechanics of an acoustic grand piano with modern digital sound technology. Instead of producing sound through strings and a soundboard like an acoustic piano, they use digital sampling and speaker systems — but retain real piano actions and pedals to give players an exceptionally authentic playing experience.

Key Features of AvantGrand Pianos

AvantGrand pianos use specialized grand piano actions, often taken from Yamaha’s acoustic instruments, which means the hammers and key weight feel very close to a true acoustic piano. Some models use real wooden keys.

They use sophisticated sensors beneath each key and hammer to precisely detect your performance — timing, velocity, and expression — and translate it into high-quality sampled sound with minimal delay.

Instead of a physical soundboard and strings, AvantGrand pianos use high-resolution samples from Yamaha’s top concert grand pianos (like the Yamaha CFX and Bösendorfer Imperial) and advanced modelling technologies like Virtual Resonance Modeling (VRM) to recreate rich, expressive tones.

They include pedals that replicate the feel of an acoustic grand piano, including half-pedal control for refined sustain and tonal shading.

Many models feature USB audio recording, Bluetooth® connectivity, and can interface with apps like Yamaha’s Smart Pianist for enhanced control and learning tools.
