Bach’s French Overture in B Minor, BWV 831 was published in 1735 as part of the second volume of his Clavier-Übung, together with the famous Italian Concerto. Despite its title, the work is much more than an overture. It is a complete 11-movement partita, combining the grand French overture style with a succession of contrasting dance movements. The music is characterised by rich melodic invention, intricate rhythms and sophisticated keyboard writing.
