Beethoven’s 7 Sonatinas were written during his youth and already show many of the mature musical characteristics that would become central to his later piano works. The collection includes the popular Sonatina in G Major and Sonatina in F Major, as well as the Sonatina in F Minor, WoO 47 No. 2, whose character anticipates Beethoven’s famous Pathétique Sonata in C Minor, Op. 13. Together with dances and easier variations, these works provide an excellent introduction to Beethoven’s piano music and form a useful foundation for studying his larger sonatas.
